PPG launches moisture-resistant, anti-corrosion powder primer

ECHEMI 2024-08-07

PPG has announced the launch of Primeron Optimal zinc epoxy powder primer. Formulated with an optimized zinc content, the patent-pending product provides better results than standard zinc-rich primers and meets stringent ISO C5 corrosion protection specifications for use in high-humidity and corrosive environments.

With a lower specific gravity than standard zinc-rich primers (2.0 vs. 3.6), PPG Primeron Optimal primers are also lower in density, making them easier to apply and requiring half the amount of paint, saving costs and improving sustainability. In addition, PPG Primeron Optimal primers contain no VOC solvents.

“Corrosion protection is a key factor in part durability and one of the biggest challenges facing the coatings industry,” said Paul Bradley, PPG product development manager, industrial coatings. “PPG Primeron Optimal provides improved adhesion and corrosion resistance even in coastal environments and has a better overall performance balance than traditional zinc-rich primers.”

Other benefits include corrosion resistance, excellent adhesion on materials such as smooth and grit-blasted steel, and a strong bond that prevents peeling, chipping and degradation. In laboratory testing, the primer exceeded 10,000 hours of salt spray performance on grit-blasted steel. Designed for use on steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, metallized steel and aluminum, it is suitable for a wide range of applications, including trailers, tanks, pipelines, automotive parts and machinery.

“PPG Primeron Optima is a major leap forward in corrosion protection and embodies PPG’s commitment to sustainable advantage solutions and innovation in powder coatings,” said Shelley Verdun, PPG business manager for industrial powder coatings. PPG Primeron Optimal can be gelled (partially cured) or used in a two-coat, one-bake process, resulting in a faster, more sustainable and energy-efficient finish that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50 percent.

PPG Primeron Optimal zinc epoxy primer is part of the company's new PPG Primeron powder primer series, designed to provide high corrosion resistance for a variety of applications and specific requirements, depending on the end use, operating environment and substrate. The portfolio includes epoxy, polyester and epoxy polyester chemistry solutions, including PPG Primeron Optimal - optimized zinc content provides strong corrosion protection, higher transfer efficiency and better overall performance balance than standard zinc-rich primers; PPG Primeron Legacy - a traditional zinc-rich primer that provides the strongest corrosion protection; PPG Primeron Auto - designed for layered production in the automotive and professional markets; PPG Primeron Edge - provides best-in-class corrosion protection for substrates with sharp edges, optimized for substrate degassing, and effectively releases bubbles in the coating during the curing process; PPG Primeron Versa - a versatile primer that provides strong corrosion protection for a variety of substrates, including aluminum.
