Monna Lisa reduces CO2 and VOC emissions with International Coatings
Intergard 7500, AkzoNobel’s marine coatings brand, has announced that Monna Lisa, a new cable-laying vessel owned by Prysmian, will be coated with Intergard 7500 primer and Intersmooth 7465Si antifouling solution.
The decision is estimated to reduce the vessel’s carbon emissions (CO 2 ) by 672 tonnes during dry docking and reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) by more than 11 tonnes during construction.
By using Intergard 7500, a high-solids universal primer solution, the shipyard can reduce VOC emissions during construction and significantly reduce packaging by eliminating more than 1,000 waste cans.
Intergard 7500 is an aluminium-containing pure epoxy product that offers excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance, offering shipowners significant maintenance savings compared to other modified epoxy universal primers, especially when used during newbuilding.
The antifouling solution selected was Intersmooth 74765Si, a low-friction, self-polishing copolymer antifouling coating that allows shipowners to keep their vessels smooth and clean during operation, while minimising fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions.
Shipowners are facing increasing regulatory pressure to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announcing new carbon targets for the fleet last year.
International and the shipowner reviewed different coating options and scenarios using the company’s Intertrac® Vision predictive tool to optimise and select the best option that would provide the best economic solution while maximising sustainability benefits.
Prysmian said the two coatings were chosen for the vessel to help it deliver on its sustainability commitments during construction and operation. Monna Lisa will be the second newbuild owned by Prysmian to feature International coatings, further strengthening the partnership between the two companies and shipbuilder Vard Group.
Monna Lisa is expected to be completed and commissioned in early 2025.
