3 Stages of China's Cognitive Impairment Rehabilitation Device Industry's Rapid Growth
As understanding of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment deepens, and the concept of early diagnosis and treatment becomes widespread, the demand for cognitive impairment rehabilitation devices is expected to continue growing. These devices are designed specifically for patients with cognitive impairments, aiming to enhance their cognitive abilities by improving memory, attention, executive function, and language expression skills, helping patients restore or improve their quality of life.
The development of China's cognitive impairment rehabilitation device industry can be divided into three significant stages. The first stage (1988-2002) was the germination period, during which China began preliminary research on Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment, laying the foundation for the industry. The second stage (2002-2010) was the startup period, where research deepened, and the release of relevant medical guidelines increased social awareness of cognitive impairments. The third stage (2010-present) has been a period of rapid growth, with cognitive rehabilitation gaining widespread attention in China, ongoing research, the commercialization and scaling of rehabilitation devices, and government policies further regulating the market environment.
In China, the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairments primarily rely on the memory clinics of neurology departments, while geriatrics and psychiatry departments also actively participate, forming a relatively comprehensive diagnostic and treatment system. Currently, the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is mainly concentrated in the neurology departments of tertiary general hospitals (accounting for 64.2%), while geriatrics and psychiatry play important roles in managing complex cases.
As the tiered medical system accelerates, primary healthcare institutions face an urgent need to enhance their early screening and diagnostic capabilities, which will drive them to increase the deployment of cognitive impairment rehabilitation devices to provide more accurate assessments and more effective rehabilitation training services, further promoting the development of the rehabilitation device industry.
Many regions across China have actively launched the construction of elderly cognitive impairment support centers. For example, each nursing home in Jiading District, Shanghai, has set up a dedicated cognitive impairment care area with specialized beds; Guangzhou has explored a family-based management model for moderate-to-severe dementia patients through the "Pearl River Memory Clinic"; and Chengdu has built support centers and care areas within its comprehensive elderly service centers, equipped with professional devices.
However, despite the government's high emphasis, the cognitive impairment rehabilitation device industry still faces various challenges. Manufacturers have relatively limited investment in this field, and the technical barriers are relatively high, affecting the industry's rapid development.
The competitive landscape of China's cognitive impairment rehabilitation device industry presents three tiers. The first tier, represented by companies like Xiangyu Medical, Qianjing Rehabilitation, and BrainPower, has larger enterprises with higher market shares; the second tier includes companies like Longzhi and Youde Medical, which are relatively large but have more diversified businesses; the third tier, represented by Ailite Medical and Yikang Electronics, has smaller enterprises but with a focus on cognitive impairment rehabilitation devices.
Xiangyu Medical has launched a "Cognitive Impairment Rehabilitation Assessment and Training System" in the field of cognitive impairment rehabilitation devices, integrating advanced technologies and equipment to provide comprehensive assessment and training for patients. BrainPower, leveraging brain science and artificial intelligence technologies, has developed medical-grade digital therapy products, offering innovative treatment solutions for cognitive impairment patients.
The application of virtual reality (VR) technology in cognitive impairment treatment holds promising prospects. With its unique advantages, such as systematicity, controllable intervention, and data visualization, VR is expected to provide more effective rehabilitation training for cognitive impairment patients. Relevant research suggests that VR intervention has a positive impact on improving the cognitive function of patients with cognitive impairments.
