Canada Approves Genetically Modified Corn Variety DP-51291-2 for Food Use

Canada has made significant progress in the field of genetically modified foods, approving a new variety of corn called DP-51291-2 for food consumption. Health Canada announced the decision on August 14, 2024, after conducting an exhaustive scientific assessment of the GMO corn to ensure it is safe for human health.

The corn variety was created using recombinant DNA technology to make it resistant to pests and herbicides. Health Canada scientists conducted a comprehensive assessment to confirm whether the change to this corn variety posed a greater risk to human health than the traditional corn varieties currently available on the Canadian market.

The results of the evaluation showed that the modification of the maize variety did not increase the risk to human health. In addition, Health Canada confirmed that the new corn variety does not cause allergic reactions and that its nutritional value is comparable to other edible traditional corn varieties on the market.
