Australia and New Zealand Update Food Standards Code with Amendment No. 230

Australia and New Zealand have officially published Amendments to Codex 230, which implement important updates in a number of key areas. The amendments, published by the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) on 15 August 2024, detail changes to standards relating to food irradiation, ingredient specifications, processing AIDS and food produced using genetic technology.

The amendments cover a number of applications, as follows:

A1261: Increase the maximum allowable energy of X-rays during food irradiation.

A1281: Approval for the use of genetically modified maize variety DP910521 in food.

A1282: Approval of subtilis protease derived from transgenic Bacillus subtilis as a processing aid.

A1283: Consent for the use of 2' -fucosyl lactose produced by transgenic Bacillus subtilis in infant formula.

These changes reflect the continuous advancement of food technology and the need for regulations to be constantly updated to accommodate new innovations. FSANZ is committed to ensuring that food standards remain up-to-date and scientifically sound.
