Frequent Food Safety Incidents in the UK: 1837 Incidents, 451 Microbiological Contamination Incidents, Chinese Products Involved in 88 Incidents!
According to the UK Food Safety Incident Report 2023-2024, a total of 1,837 food and feed related safety incidents were recorded in England, Northern Ireland and Wales in the last financial year. These incidents mainly involved pathogenic microorganisms, totaling 451, and allergen problems, totaling 240. In addition, there were 55 outbreaks of foodborne illness, with the main pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes, shiga toxin-producing E. coli, norovirus, Salmonella and cryptosporidium.
In terms of food types, meat products were the main problem, with 303 incidents reported. This was followed by nutritious foods, with 136 reported incidents, and poultry products, with 128 reported incidents. In terms of food country of origin, local products in the UK emerged as the main source, with 878 incidents reported. It was followed by the United States, with 98 reported accidents, and China, with 88 reported accidents.
In order to prevent food safety incidents more effectively, the UK Food Standards Agency requires food operators to establish a root cause analysis (RCA) system. In 2023-2024, the bureau received 255 RCA reports from businesses. In addition, the FSA has established a Risk Crisis Management (RCM) program to enhance its ability to respond to large-scale food safety crises and atypical events.
From this report, we can observe the continuous strengthening of food safety regulation in the UK. They are not only asking companies to take the initiative to analyze the causes of accidents, but also improving emergency response mechanisms to more effectively prevent and control food safety risks. Through these measures, the United Kingdom is expected to effectively curb the occurrence of food safety incidents, so as to ensure the health of consumers.
