Japan Tightens Food Standards Again, Two Major Revisions Hide Such ‘Schemes’, Chinese Export Companies Need to Be Careful!

ECHEMI 2024-08-23

According to a recent announcement by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan has made two important revisions to its food standards. First, the standard for breadcrumbs (No. JAS1491:2024) was updated. The main content of this revision includes the addition of some mandatory labeling information, such as the name of the product, storage method, shelf life, raw materials, food additives and country of origin. At the same time, the specific requirements for these annotated information are also clearly stipulated.

Secondly, the standard for processed tomato products (No. JAS1419:2024) has also been revised. The revision mainly focuses on the quality and sensory indicators of tomato paste and tomato puree, and adds a provision that in solid processing tomato products, the total addition of other plant-derived ingredients other than tomato cannot exceed 10%.

The revision of these two standards aims to further regulate the production and sales process of relevant food products to ensure that the rights and interests of consumers are protected. Industry insiders pointed out that this reflects the Japanese government's great attention to food quality and safety. The amendments also create new compliance requirements for Chinese companies that export food to Japan. Therefore, relevant enterprises should pay close attention to these changes and adjust their production and sales strategies in a timely manner to ensure that their products meet the latest standard requirements.
