Revision of South Korea's Food Code Raises Concerns for Infant Food Safety: August 26 Announcement

On August 26, the South Korean government issued a notice No. 2024-395, which involves the revision of some provisions of the Codex Alimentarius. The main contents of this revision can be elaborated as follows:

1. Meticulous adjustments were made to the product standards of infant formula food. Specifically, infant formula foods are subdivided into three categories according to the different age groups of infants and young children: formula and formula foods for smaller infants, formula and formula foods for older infants, and formula and formula foods for growing infants and young children. This classification aims to better meet the nutritional needs of infants and young children of different ages and ensure their healthy growth.

2. The residue limit standards of pyrethrin and piperazole were modified. This initiative aims to ensure food safety and reduce the potential harm of pesticide residues to human health. By adjusting the residue limits of these pesticides, the Korean government hopes to further improve food safety standards and ensure that consumers can eat safer and healthier food.

The comment period for the above amendments will continue until October 25, 2024. During this period, the public and relevant stakeholders can put forward their own opinions and suggestions on the revision, so that the government can fully consider the voices of all parties when making final decisions.
