21 American Tourists Infected with Rare Virus After Vacationing in Cuba, 3 Hospitalized! Is Cuba's Economic Crisis Creating a Breeding Ground for Viruses?

As of August 16, 2023, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted in its most recent report that there were 21 confirmed cases of Oropouche infection in U.S. travelers after returning from Cuba. The Oropouche virus is a virus spread mainly through the bite of a specific species of mosquito. Typical symptoms include headache, fever, muscle pain and joint pain. Fortunately, the virus does not usually kill those infected. Most of the cases occurred between May and July, with three patients requiring hospitalization for symptoms so severe, but there have been no deaths, according to the CDC.

It is worth noting that Cuba is currently facing a severe economic crisis, which makes it even more difficult to contain the spread of the virus. Cuba has encountered difficulties in implementing anti-mosquito measures due to unstable electricity supplies and fuel shortages.
