NAFDAC: Dove soap recalled due to harmful chemical lilyral

ECHEMI 2024-09-11

According to a notification from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dove Beauty Cream soap (100g) (batch number 81832M 08), manufactured in Germany, is being recalled due to the presence of harmful chemicals in its ingredients.

NAFDAC stated on its website that the soap contains 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde (BMHCA). This chemical is banned in cosmetics due to its high potential for health hazards. It is commonly found in perfumes and is known to cause skin sensitization and reproductive damage.

“The presence of 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde in the product is a violation of the Cosmetics Regulations and poses serious health concerns. 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde is banned for use in cosmetics as it may cause reproductive damage and skin sensitization and has been banned in several countries, including across the European Union,” the agency said.

NAFDAC stressed that the importation of the soap into Nigeria is prohibited. The agency also found that this batch of Dove soap and other Dove products such as Derma Spa Goodness and Men Care have been recalled or banned in several countries for the same reason.

The agency urged consumers who have purchased the soap to stop using it immediately and return the remaining stock to NAFDAC offices, and healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions experienced while using the product through NAFDAC’s electronic reporting platform or mobile app.
