Early September Sees Dramatic Changes in Oxygen Market: Supply Chain Disruptions, PMI Decline, Surge in Winter Coal Demand, China Faces Unprecedented Challenges!
Since the beginning of September, China's oxygen market has experienced unprecedented volatility, mainly due to logistical difficulties, which have brought unprecedented challenges to oxygen production. Specifically, severe weather conditions, such as Typhoon Yagi, not only caused widespread damage, but also directly led to severe supply chain disruptions in Vietnam, Taiwan, and parts of China. As a result, industrial activity in these areas has been blocked, further straining the oxygen supply.
Adding to the gloom, China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell 0.3 percentage points in August from July, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. The decline in the PMI not only reflects a slowdown in manufacturing activity, but also signals greater pressure on the production and supply of many key raw materials and energy sources, including oxygen.
As winter approaches, China's consumer demand for coal is expected to explode. As the world's largest consumer of coal, China relies heavily on coal for power generation, especially at peak times. This dependence is particularly pronounced in winter, when hydropower and solar power generation become much less efficient in colder climates. To ensure a stable electricity supply in the winter, China must significantly increase its consumption of coal.
Specifically, miners have pushed coal production to a seasonal high of 390 million tons in July 2024, a significant increase from 378 million tons in July 2022 and 373 million tons in the same month last year. This growth trend is expected to continue in the coming months to ensure sufficient supply of coal for power generation. However, it also means that all aspects of coal mining, transportation and processing will face greater pressure and challenges.
At the same time, oxygen production has also been affected by the growth in coal consumption. Oxygen is an essential element in many industrial processes, including steelmaking, glassmaking and chemical production. As these industries expand their operations to meet the growing demand for coal-derived products, their demand for oxygen will increase accordingly. However, due to factors such as logistical challenges and supply chain disruptions, oxygen production and supply have struggled to keep pace with this growth.
ChemAnalyst's pricing intelligence shows that demand for oxygen in the downstream sector is expected to remain high in the coming months. This forecast undoubtedly brings new challenges and opportunities to the oxygen market. For oxygen producers, they need to work hard to increase production and supply capacity while ensuring safe production. For the downstream industry, it is necessary to strengthen communication and cooperation with oxygen producers to ensure a stable oxygen supply.
In addition, it is worth noting that China's power system is increasingly dependent on coal-fired power generation. This dependence not only exacerbates the growth trend of coal consumption but also increases the instability and risk of electricity supply. In order to meet this challenge, China needs to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of its energy structure and increase the proportion and utilization rate of clean energy. Only in this way can we fundamentally solve the supply of key raw materials and energy such as oxygen, and provide a strong guarantee for the sustainable and healthy development of the economy.
