HSE Announces Significant Increase in Pesticide Residue Limits, Raising Concerns Over Safety of British Agricultural Products!
The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently made three important announcements about Maximum Residue Levels for certain pesticides in certain agricultural products. MRL) for revision. These amendments are intended to ensure the safety of agricultural products, protect consumer health and comply with relevant regulatory requirements.
First, HSE announced changes to the maximum residue limits of a pesticide called isoflucypram in cereals and sheep fat. In particular, the current MRL standard will be changed, and the specific amendments are as follows:
For two grains, barley and oats, the current MRL standard is 0.01 mg/kg, and this amendment proposes to raise it to 0.06 mg/kg.
- For rye, the current MRL standard is also 0.01 mg/kg, which will be adjusted to 0.015 mg/kg.
For sheep fat, the current MRL standard is 0.01 mg/kg, which will be adjusted to 0.015 mg/kg after the revision.
It should be noted that MRL refers to the maximum allowable level of pesticide residues in agricultural products. The current MRL is proposed on the basis of Limit of Quantification (LOQ). The effective date of the amendment is set for October 31, 2024.
Second, HSE also plans to revise the maximum residue limits for another pesticide called fenazaquin in hops. The current MRL is 0.01 mg/kg, and this amendment proposes to significantly increase it to 30 mg/kg. This amendment will also come into effect on October 31, 2024.
Finally, HSE also announced a revision of MRLS for sulfoxaflor in leafy vegetables, herbs and edible flowers (excluding chicory/Belgian endive and spinach). At present, the MRL of these agricultural products has not been clearly specified, and this amendment proposes a uniform MRL of 6 mg/kg. This amendment will also take effect on October 31, 2024.
With these amendments, HSE aims to ensure that pesticide residues in agricultural products meet the latest safety standards, thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of consumers.
