Germany's Chemical Industry Business Environment Deteriorates Sharply in October! Government Electricity Pricing Plan Fails to Boost Demand, Order Backlog Continues to Decline
The business environment for the German chemical industry experienced a significant improvement in October, according to the results of a study released on Tuesday. Although it is still in negative territory, business expectations for the future have increased, mainly thanks to the government's electricity tariff scheme. The findings were released by the Ifo economic institute, whose manufacturing index jumped to -3.1 points in October from a seasonally adjusted -13.0 points in September. The jump was largely driven by an improvement in business expectations.
Specifically, the sub-measure of business expectations rose to 4.7 in October from -15.9 the previous month. This significant increase indicates that enterprises are more optimistic about the future development prospects. In order to ensure competitive electricity prices for companies in the long term, the German government has introduced a series of policy measures, including the removal of green electricity surcharges and further measures to reduce grid charges. The chemical industry responded positively to these policy measures, and as a result, the negative evaluation of competitiveness by companies decreased in October compared to the recent past.
However, despite the improvement in business conditions, this positive sentiment was tempered by continued weakness in the manufacturing sector. Demand for chemical products remained subdued in October, with order backlogs falling again. Against this backdrop, financing bottlenecks have intensified, further dampening the willingness to invest in the sector. "It is right to reduce the burden on chemical companies now in order to maintain production capacity in Germany throughout the economic crisis," said Ifo industry analyst Anna Wolf. This view highlights the key role of government policy in the development of the industry, while also pointing out the current challenges.
