Fructosyl Transferase May Harm Gut Health!
On 7 November 2024, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) issued a circular No. 314-24. In this notice, a specific application number A1299 is referred to. The application focuses on a substance called Fructosyltransferase, which is used as an auxiliary additive in food processing. Specifically, this enzyme is produced by the fermentation of Aspergillus oryzae, and its main function is to help produce a food ingredient called short-chain fructooligosaccharides (sc-FOS).
Short-chain fructooligosaccharide is a prebiotic with multiple health benefits that is often used to improve gut health and promote the growth of beneficial flora. Fructosyltransferase, as a processing aid, can effectively catalyze the production of this important ingredient. Therefore, the purpose of FSANZ's consultation is to gather comments and suggestions from the public and interested parties on the use of this enzyme to ensure its safety and suitability.
According to FSANZ's notice, the comment period on the application will be open until December 5, 2024, at 6pm (Canberra local time). During this time, any individual or organisation can submit their feedback to Food Standards Australia for further assessment and decision making. This process helps to ensure the safety and transparency of food additives, thereby safeguarding the health and interests of consumers.
