BASF and Exterra join forces to build large-scale carbon capture and storage facility in Canada

BASF and Exterra Carbon Solutions have joined forces to develop a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Quebec, Canada. BASF is a large chemical company, while Exterra Carbon Solutions specializes in carbon sequestration.

 

The collaboration aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the province's hard-to-abate sectors, such as cement, steel, gas-fired power and waste-to-energy. According to the International Energy Agency, these industries account for nearly 20% of global CO2 emissions.

 

The project will leverage the combined expertise of both companies. BASF will use its OASE technology to capture CO2 from industrial processes. Exterra will use its Reactive Oxide Carbonate (ROC) system to safely store the captured CO2 underground, converting it into stable minerals. This process is called ex situ mineralization. This surface storage method eliminates the risks associated with underground storage methods.

 

The project has the potential to make a significant contribution to Quebec's decarbonization goals by capturing and permanently storing large amounts of CO2. By capturing and storing CO2 emissions, the project will improve air quality in Quebec.

 

The combined technology provides a scalable and effective approach to carbon capture and storage, paving the way for wider implementation. Using surface storage ensures transparency and safety, eliminating concerns about leaks or reversals. Exterra will generate verified carbon credits, providing additional value to participating industries.
