What is cholesterol?

This then proceeds in reactions of 19 enzymatic steps resulting in cholesterol.
Although cholesterol is great for the functionalities of our bodies, higher levels can hurt us as they can increase the risk of heart disease. This waxy chemical has the feature to travel through the bloodstream, and it can do so in two forms: low-density lipoprotein LDL and high-density lipoprotein HDL.
LDL is regarded as bad cholesterol, as higher levels can hurt human cardiac health. HDL, on the other hand, is considered “good” because it helps us transport cholesterol back to the liver for excretion and also helps reduce the risk of plaque formation, which LDL promotes.
The Chemical Composition of Cholesterol
Cholesterol is considered a lipid with a molecular formula of C27H46O; these 46 hydrogen and 27 carbon atoms make it quite a complex molecule. This lipid belongs to a class of compounds termed sterols, which is a subgroup of steroids and is characterized by a hydroxyl or OH group attached to a multi-ring structure.
In its chemical structure, there are four hydrocarbon rings, which are three six-membered rings and one five-member ring fused together. This structure is entangled in a way that it forms a rigid, planar ring system.
This ring consists of 27 carbons arranged in a four-ring structure known as the steroid nucleus. This ring structure gives rigidity to cholesterol molecules and is also responsible for giving them a flat, planar shape. This feature becomes crucial for its role in human cell membranes.
This is further attached to the hydroxyl group OH (located on carbon 3), which classifies cholesterol as a sterol, i.e., a combination of a steroid and alcohol. The presence of the OH group makes this molecule slightly polar, promoting its hydrophobic nature. This happens by interacting with the hydrophobic tails of phospholipids, which makes them soluble in fats and oils rather than in water.
There is also a double bond between carbons 5 and 6 in the B ring of cholesterol, which introduces slight flexibility into the otherwise rigid structure. This arrangement of carbon atoms and their bond affects cholesterol’s packing within cell membranes. Also, it significantly influences membrane fluidity.
The unique structure of cholesterol, where it combines both polar and nonpolar regions, gives it the ability to embed within the cell membranes of humans. This feature enables it to travel through cells and can maintain membrane fluidity and permeability.
The unique chemical composition of cholesterol also enables it to act as a precursor for bioactive molecules like steroid hormones, which are essential components in cortisol, aldosterone, estrogen, testosterone, bile acids, and vitamin D. These bioactive components each play crucial physiological roles and also influence regulating salt and water balance to facilitate calcium absorption and aid fat digestion in human bodies.
Cholesterol and its Applications:
Aside from its significant benefits for human health, it is also used in modern industries for various purposes. The most common use is in the cosmetic industry, where it is used to stabilize emulsions, support skin barrier repair, and enhance skin hydration. It is also heavily used in pharma industries as a precursor in synthesizing steroid-based medications.
