Hungary Implements New Regulations: Strict Control on Trans Fatty Acid Content in Food

On 11 November 2024, the Hungarian Government issued Regulation 53/2024, which establishes the relevant regulations for the official control of foods containing trans fatty acids, which will come into force the next day after the announcement. The main contents include:

(1) Applicable to oils intended for consumption directly by consumers or as food ingredients, not to naturally occurring trans fatty acids in fats of animal origin;

(2) The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nebih) shall provide data on the results of the inspection of trans fatty acid content on a quarterly basis, including the information of the inspected enterprise, the name of the food, the manufacturer, the distributor, etc., and test the trans fatty acid content per 100g of each food and each 100g of fat contained in it, establish a relevant database, and monitor changes in food composition.
