Covestro to Invest Millions of Euros to Expand Production Capacity in the U.S. by 2025
On January 8, 2025, Covestro announced it will invest millions of euros to expand its production capacity at the Hebron plant in Ohio, USA. This investment will be realized through the construction of multiple new production lines and infrastructure, aimed at producing customized polycarbonate compounds and blends, thereby significantly enhancing its capabilities in solutions and specialty businesses in the U.S. market.
Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer of Covestro, stated, "Our investment in the integrated plant in the U.S. is an essential part of the company’s 'sustainable growth' strategy. With this expansion, we can meet the growing demand from customers for specialty polycarbonate materials, grow alongside them, and strengthen our position as a leading supplier of polycarbonate materials in North America. This move also aligns with our strategy of producing locally to serve locally, ensuring reliable supply close to our customers."
The capacity expansion is a critical step in meeting the increasing demand for high-quality materials from the automotive, electronics, and healthcare industries in North America. Lily Wang, head of Covestro's engineering plastics business unit, pointed out, "To succeed in these markets, you need the right product mix, consistent quality, supply reliability, and solution-oriented technical expertise. The expanded capacity for differentiated polycarbonate enables us to better meet customers' complex demands for high-quality, high-tech materials with personalized characteristics."
Covestro already has an established R&D center in Pittsburgh and is further strengthening its integrated capabilities in the U.S. In the future, these two facilities will work more closely together to promote the technological conversion from laboratory development to industrial production, supporting major transformation processes such as the electrification and automation of vehicles, sustainability, and digitalization.
Samir Hifri, President and Chairman of Covestro LLC, stated, "Following our recent announcement of nearly €40 million in investment in R&D capabilities in Pittsburgh, this investment further underscores the importance of U.S. plants and the U.S. market in Covestro's global strategy. The expansion of our polycarbonate capacity in Ohio will help us better supply our customers and represents our commitment to our plant employees, the Hebron community, and the entire U.S. market."
The construction of the new production lines is expected to begin in 2025, with operations starting by the end of 2026.
