Novo Nordisk Partners with Valo for $4.6 Billion Obesity Drug Expansion
Novo Nordisk announced on January 8 that it has reached an expansion agreement with Valo Health, aiming to leverage Valo's extensive human datasets and AI-driven computational capabilities to discover and develop new treatments for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Previously, the two companies entered into a collaboration in September 2023, under which they would jointly develop up to 11 drug projects, primarily focusing on cardiovascular diseases. Valo is eligible for up to $2.7 billion in milestone payments, as well as R&D funding and potential royalty payments.
Under the terms of the new expansion agreement, Valo will receive an upfront payment, equity investment, and a potential near-term milestone payment of $190 million. Additionally, Valo is now eligible for milestone payments for up to 20 drug projects, adding 9 new drug projects to a total of approximately $4.6 billion, along with R&D funding and potential royalty payments. This expanded collaboration will continue to utilize Valo's Opal computing platform capabilities, combined with Novo Nordisk's key joint capabilities in human data and genetics, as well as Novo Nordisk's expertise in cardiovascular metabolic diseases.
This collaboration has already led to the identification of several potential new targets that may serve as the basis for differentiated cardiovascular metabolic drug projects, and Novo Nordisk is actively advancing multiple small molecule preclinical drug discovery projects. Marcus Schindler, Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of Novo Nordisk, stated, "We are very pleased with the progress made in the first year of our collaboration with Valo and are excited to expand the scope of our partnership to focus more on obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as cardiovascular diseases. We have begun to realize the synergy between Valo and Novo Nordisk to advance multiple human-centric AI-driven projects, and we believe this partnership will help Novo Nordisk achieve our ambitious goal of expanding the number of new drug projects we bring to the clinic."
Brian Alexander, CEO of Valo Health and Partner at Flagship Pioneering, stated, "We are thrilled to continue growing on the early progress made with Novo Nordisk— a leader in the global obesity and diabetes treatment space— especially at this exciting moment for revitalizing treatments for cardiovascular metabolic diseases. This level of investment demonstrates our close collaboration to deploy human-centered AI to rapidly discover and develop new therapeutic drugs for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. This partnership fully leverages the Opal computing platform by seeking new therapeutic targets within large real-world patient datasets and validating these targets using human preclinical models, while employing human-centric AI small molecules to design treatments targeting these pathways."
