August 19 news
Since August, the Chinese PTA market has shown a trend of "initially stable with fluctuations, followed by a strong rally," with overall prices rising and a significant improvement in market sentiment.
In early August, the PTA market as a whole remained under pressure and experienced volatile fluctuations, with subdued trading activity. At the beginning of the month, the spot benchmark price in East China hovered around 5,945 CNY per ton, with prices fluctuating narrowly. The market was characterized by a balanced tug-of-war between bullish and bearish forces. Upstream costs showed moderate fluctuations, while downstream textile demand, driven by essential needs, remained insufficient. Coupled with the steady operation of some production units, supply and demand were relatively balanced, leaving the market lacking clear upward momentum.
Starting in mid-August, the PTA market witnessed a strong rebound, with prices rapidly surging higher. Affected by factors such as concentrated plant maintenance and weather-related disruptions to logistics and transportation, China’s PTA operating rate once dropped to its lowest level of the year. As a result, spot supply in the market significantly contracted, social inventories continued to decline, and the tight supply situation became increasingly pronounced. Coupled with the steady rise in international crude oil and PX feedstock prices, the cost side provided robust support for PTA, triggering an explosive rally in prices. As of August 19, the PTA spot price surged to 6,310 CNY per ton, with the month-to-date cumulative price increase approaching 6.13%.
Analysts believe that in the short term, the standoff between the US and Iran shows no signs of easing, and the high volatility of crude oil prices will continue to solidify the cost floor for PTA. Additionally, the recovery in demand further boosts the market trend, with the operating rate of downstream polyester plants steadily rising to around 82%. The traditional peak season for textiles has begun, with restocking demand increasing, effectively absorbing existing inventory and further consolidating the foundation for price increases. However, on the supply side, multiple maintenance units are scheduled to restart in late August, leading to an increase in market supply and gradually easing the tight balance between supply and demand, which suppresses the momentum for price increases. Therefore, from late August to early September, PTA is expected to maintain a high and wide-ranging fluctuation. It is still necessary to pay attention to geopolitical news related to crude oil, the progress of facility restarts, and the recovery of downstream orders.
