BASF Sells Styrodur Business

ECHEMI 2025-01-10

BASF has signed an agreement with BACHL to sell its extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation material Styrodur business.

BACHL is one of Germany's leading insulation material manufacturers, an experienced XPS producer and a long-term distribution partner for BASF Styrodur.

The sale also includes the Styrodur brand. About 50 BASF SE employees in production, marketing and sales are involved in the business, and the affected employees will remain with BASF.

Subject to approval by the relevant competition authorities, the sale is expected to be completed in mid-2025. The parties have agreed to keep the financial details of the transaction confidential.

“By selling the Styrodur business, BASF will continue to focus on its EPS strategy, which includes our well-known Neopor and Styropor brands,” said Klaus Ries, Head of Business Management Styrenics at BASF Europe.

As early as October 2024, BASF emphasized its ambition to continue growing in the European EPS market and announced that it would expand the Neopor production capacity in Ludwigshafen by 50,000 tons to 250,000 tons per year from the beginning of 2027.

“We firmly believe that BACHL’s experience and expertise in the XPS market will provide the best future development path for the Styrodur brand and the agreement reached will further strengthen our partnership,” added Ries.
