Perstorp Opens Plant in Amsterdam to Enter Synthetic Ester Business
Global specialty chemicals innovator Perstorp, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s Petronas Chemical Group Berhad (PCG), will serve the growing specialty fluids market from its new plant in Amsterdam.
In December 2024, Perstorp announced the acquisition of an ester plant outside Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where Perstorp plans to start producing a new range of synthetic esters in early 2025.
This marks Perstorp’s first step towards growth in the synthetic ester business, targeting the specialty fluids market to become a recognized leader and supplier of synthetic fluids that deliver sustainability benefits such as increased operating safety, improved cooling efficiency and reduced fluid maintenance.
In addition, Perstorp plans to obtain ISCC PLUS certification for the plant to produce Pro Environment products with a reduced carbon footprint, which will be independently verified by a third party.
The acquisition will enhance Perstorp’s position as both a base stock producer and a supplier of synthetic esters. "We can thus improve our position in the value chain and serve new markets with innovative and more sustainable products", says Dr. Valentina Serra-Holm, Vice President Engineered Fluids.
Perstorp plans to focus on underdeveloped and underserved application areas where significant opportunities or unmet needs are identified. Perstorp will therefore focus on serving the specialty fluids market, especially dielectric fluids for data center cooling, which is expected to grow by double digits in the coming years.
"We are committed to ongoing collaboration with existing customers and actively building relationships with end users and other partners in the value chain to drive the adoption of synthetic esters in emerging applications. The backward integration of our production processes will ensure reliable supply to our customers", continues Dr. Valentina Serra-Holm.
"We are committed to being a key partner and collaborator in new technology applications and a dedicated sustainable solutions provider in various industrial and specialty chemical sectors", concludes Ib Jensen, CEO of the Perstorp Group
