$795 Million! Flowers Acquires Simple Mills
Flowers Foods, a well-known manufacturer of bread and sweets, announced the acquisition of health snack manufacturer Simple Mills for $795 million. This acquisition aims to enhance Flowers Foods' growth potential and diversify its product portfolio by introducing products like cookies, snack bars, and baking mixes. Since its establishment in 2012, Simple Mills has focused on producing high-quality health foods, achieving net sales of $240 million in 2024, a 14% increase year-over-year. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
Although Flowers Foods is famous for producing bread and sweets such as Tastykake, the company has been expanding into more trendy food sectors in recent years. Companies typically pursue mergers and acquisitions to accelerate growth and expand their influence in the increasingly popular food sector. Acquiring Simple Mills not only helps Flowers Foods diversify its product portfolio and reduce its reliance on bread products but also solidifies its position in the snack market.
Currently, Flowers Foods' snack product line primarily consists of brands like Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s. Simple Mills further expands Flowers' influence in the snack sector by offering products such as cookies, brownie mixes, waffle mixes, chocolate bars, and baking mixes. Simple Mills’ products are known for their healthy and recognizable ingredients, such as their chocolate brownie seed and nut flour cookies, which use nutrient-rich ingredients like watermelon seed flour, cashew flour, sunflower seed flour, and flaxseed.
Ryals McMullian, CEO of Flowers Foods, stated, “The addition of Simple Mills not only provides the company with a larger snack platform that resonates with mainstream consumers but also offers significant room for future growth.” The company plans to achieve growth by expanding distribution, accelerating innovation, increasing speed, and entering new areas and new categories.
Simple Mills products are available in over 30,000 natural and conventional stores. McMullian further noted, “With its leading market position and future growth potential, Simple Mills perfectly aligns with our strategy to add compelling brands in more suitable segments to complement and diversify our existing product portfolio.”
After the transaction is completed, Simple Mills will continue to operate as an independent subsidiary of Flowers Foods, led by founder and CEO Katlin Smith and her leadership team. Simple Mills will retain its operations in Chicago, Illinois, and Mill Valley, California. The decision to retain Simple Mills' existing executive team is crucial for maintaining the company's innovation and growth, which are key factors in Simple Mills' success. Flowers Foods hopes to leverage this acquisition to maintain its strong momentum in the bread market.
