Sumitomo Chemical Acquires Syensqo's LCP Business to Boost Market Position with Growing Demand
On February 10, Sumitomo Chemical announced its acquisition of the liquid crystal polymer (LCP) resin business from Belgium's Syensqo SA/NV. This strategic move aims to integrate Syensqo's products and technologies, enhancing Sumitomo's ability to meet emerging market demands, particularly in the information and communication technology (ICT) and mobile applications sectors.
Sumitomo Chemical highlighted that the rise of AI and increasing power demands have positioned LCP as a critical material for power devices in electric vehicles, next-generation millimeter-wave radars, and high-capacity connectors for data centers. Notably, Syensqo's LCP products are recognized for their high heat resistance, enabling Sumitomo to better cater to diverse customer needs. Leveraging Syensqo's existing LCP development projects and production technologies will also allow Sumitomo to expand its product range across various industrial sectors.
The announcement also indicates that Sumitomo Chemical plans to establish LCP as one of its core businesses, aiming to double its sales revenue from this segment by the early 2030s through various collaborations.
LCPs are high-performance specialty engineering plastics characterized by rigid rod-like molecular chains that exhibit liquid crystalline behavior under specific conditions. They boast a range of advantageous properties, including high strength, excellent thermal resistance, low moisture absorption, and superior flame retardancy, making them suitable for applications in electronics, automotive, and biomedicine.
Currently, the global LCP production capacity is estimated at around 30,000 tons per year, with major manufacturers including Sumitomo Chemical, Borealis, Toray, and Celanese, particularly dominating the Asian market. As domestic companies in China gradually enhance their capabilities in LCP production, firms like Kingfa Technology are making strides with high-performance LCP materials, further contributing to the industry's growth.
Looking ahead, as technology advances and the electronics sector thrives, the demand for high-performance materials like LCP will continue to rise. The proactive positioning of domestic enterprises in the LCP sector will significantly drive China's industrial upgrade and domestic substitution efforts.
