Urgent Concerns as 9 US Patients Report Eye Complications from GLP-1RA Medications

Recent findings published in the JAMA Ophthalmology have raised alarms after nine U.S. patients experienced eye complications following the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists like Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro. This has led to speculation about a potential link between these medications and eye-related issues.

In response to these concerns, Eli Lilly announced on February 19 that it is conducting further analyses of relevant data, including ophthalmic information. The company emphasized its ongoing communication with regulatory agencies to discuss potential safety issues. Eli Lilly noted that the study in question is purely observational and does not establish a causal relationship between tirzepatide and the reported eye complications. Patients experiencing side effects while using Lilly's medications are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals promptly.

Similarly, Novo Nordisk addressed the situation, stating that the study does not confirm a causal link between semaglutide and the reported eye complications. The rare eye condition known as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) has not been recognized as an adverse reaction associated with semaglutide in approved labeling. Novo Nordisk clarified that their analysis of randomized controlled trials, including assessments by ophthalmologists, found very few diagnosed cases of NAION, indicating no imbalance that would negatively reflect on their GLP-1RA products.
