China Launches World's Most Powerful Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine
China has launched the world's most powerful methanol dual-fuel engine in Shanghai, the engine's manufacturer announced on February 25.
This methanol engine, which is made in China and independently developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, weighs nearly 1,953 tons and has a maximum design power of 64,500 kilowatts, and can be called the "giant heart" of the ship.
The giant engine uses an advanced digital intelligent control system, 95% of its power comes from methanol fuel, and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 7.5%.
"Let's make a comparison. If the engine runs 300 days a year, its reduced carbon emissions are equivalent to the total emissions of 72,000 gasoline passenger cars in a year," said Dong Jingjin, project manager of methanol engines at China Shipbuilding Corporation.
Against the backdrop of the continuous advancement of the green transformation of the water transport industry, this engine is expected to meet huge market demand. And the debut of this engine will soon be carried on a 16,000TEU container ship. "Currently, this engine has been successfully installed on container ships and bulk carriers. The market demand for methanol engines will be very considerable in the future. We will launch different methanol engines in two to three years, hoping to apply them to more types of chemical tankers and special ships, providing more environmentally friendly and efficient power solutions." said Mr. Dong.
