China Imposes 25% Tariffs on Canadian Seafood and Pork Exports Starting March 20

ECHEMI 2025-03-18

In a significant trade escalation, China announced on March 8 that it will impose 25% tariffs on Canadian seafood and pork products, effective March 20. This move is a direct response to tariffs Canada implemented last October on Chinese-made electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum.

The Ministry of Commerce of China stated that the tariffs target a wide range of Canadian seafood, including crab, shrimp, prawns, clams, and various lobster products. This decision comes as the U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the imposition of similar tariffs on most Canadian goods until April 2.

According to Statistics Canada, the U.S. and China collectively accounted for 83% of Canada's lobster exports in 2024, with total exports reaching approximately $2.49 billion. Exports to the U.S. were valued at around $1.9 billion, while exports to China were approximately $525 million.

This tariff announcement underscores the ongoing tensions in international trade and could have significant implications for Canadian exporters, particularly in the seafood sector.
