EFSA Reaffirms Safety of Silica Impacting Global Food Additive Standards
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently reaffirmed its previous conclusion that silica (E551), also known as synthetic amorphous silica (SAS), is safe as a food additive under the reported usage levels and methods. The latest assessment particularly examined the safety of synthetic amorphous silica in infant foods (especially for babies under 16 weeks), indicating that at the current exposure levels, it does not raise any safety concerns.
Previously, the EU had certified that the use of silica as a carrier in food and supplements complies with regulations. According to EU Regulation EC 1333/2008 and its amendments, the usage of silica in food supplements is classified as “Quantum satis,” meaning it can be used as needed to achieve the desired effect, without strict upper limits. EFSA’s research further confirms the safety of silica.
Due to its unique properties, synthetic amorphous silica is widely used. It acts as a carrier and anti-caking agent, preventing clumping and ensuring smooth flow of powdered and granular foods. Its high purity, inert characteristics, and proven high performance make it indispensable across various food applications.
“To assess the safety of synthetic amorphous silica, EFSA conducted rigorous data collection and evaluation, and we greatly admire their diligence,” stated Juergen Nolde, Global Product Manager at Grace. “This conclusion reaffirms that our synthetic amorphous silica can be safely used as a food additive.”
In the food sector, EFSA’s opinions are recognized as important international standards, significantly impacting the continued safe use of synthetic amorphous silica. For over 50 years, Grace's synthetic amorphous silica has been widely applied in food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, serving functions such as beer stabilizers, clarifying agents, and anti-caking agents.
