Morocco Approves $32.5 Billion Green Hydrogen Projects to Boost Exports
Recently, the Moroccan government committee approved several green hydrogen projects valued at approximately $32.5 billion. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the committee selected three companies—Ortus from the U.S., Acciona from Spain, and Nordex from Germany—to produce green ammonia. However, specific details regarding timelines or funding sources were not disclosed.
Additionally, projects involving Abu Dhabi National Energy Company and Repsol from Spain for ammonia and fuel production, as well as plans by Moroccan renewable energy firm Nareva to produce ammonia, fuel, and steel, have also received approval.
In light of the European Green Deal, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, the Moroccan government expressed its intent to leverage green hydrogen to achieve its energy goals and enhance exports to the EU. In March 2024, Morocco announced it would allocate 300,000 hectares of land for integrated projects, including renewable energy generation and the conversion of green hydrogen into green ammonia, methanol, and synthetic fuels.
