Maxell Shuts Down 30-Year Lithium Battery Business and Dissolves China Unit
In a dramatic move after nearly three decades, Japan’s Maxell Ltd. announced it will cease production of prismatic lithium-ion batteries and dissolve its China-based subsidiary, Wuxi Maxell Energy Co., Ltd. The decision marks a significant strategic exit from traditional lithium power systems, reflecting a shift in response to industry disruption and intensifying global competition.
Founded in 1960 and once a part of Hitachi Group, Maxell was a pioneer in alkaline batteries and floppy disks. The Maxell name itself derives from “Maximum Capacity Dry Cell,” a nod to its early innovations. But today, legacy technology is being phased out in favor of next-generation solutions.
As part of its transformation plan, the company will reallocate resources toward growth sectors, notably primary batteries used in automotive and medical devices. Additionally, Maxell is betting on the future of solid-state battery technology, aiming to bring early commercial returns in the field of industrial equipment.
This bold pivot signals a new chapter in Maxell’s energy business, underscoring how legacy tech firms are adapting—or collapsing—under the weight of rapid innovation.
