Novo Nordisk Announces $1.09 Billion Investment to Expand Brazilian Production

ECHEMI 2025-04-09

Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has unveiled plans to invest 6.4 billion reais ($1.09 billion) to enhance its manufacturing capabilities in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This strategic move aims to significantly boost the production of injectable medications targeting obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

The expansion involves constructing a 74,000-square-meter facility, with operations slated to commence by 2028. This development is set to substantially increase the company’s production capacity, particularly for GLP-1-based drugs like semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy.

Brazil holds a pivotal position in Novo Nordisk’s global operations, ranking among its top five markets and serving as an export hub to over 70 countries. The company’s commitment to the region is further underscored by this substantial investment, reflecting confidence in the Brazilian market’s growth potential.

This initiative also aligns with Novo Nordisk’s broader strategy to meet the escalating global demand for its products, especially amid increasing competition from local pharmaceutical firms. By bolstering its manufacturing footprint in Brazil, Novo Nordisk aims to reinforce its market leadership and continue delivering innovative treatments to patients worldwide.
