China Launches the World's Largest CO2-Based Polycarbonate Polyol Production Line
On April 9, Anhui Putan New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. officially put into operation its breakthrough CO2-based polycarbonate polyol continuous production unit in the Huainan Modern Coal Chemical Park. This marks an important step for China in the research and development and industrial application of negative carbon new materials, making China a leader in the sustainable production of polyurethane.
Anhui Putan's 300,000 tons per year CO2-based polycarbonate polyol project is the first 10,000-ton industrial application production process unit for this product and process, with a total investment of about 2 billion yuan, and is the largest unit of its kind in the world. After the project is completed and reaches full production, it can effectively fix about 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide, with an estimated annual sales revenue of about 7.5 billion yuan, annual tax revenue of about 300 million yuan, and an estimated increase of 400 jobs.
The first phase of the project officially started operation this week, covering an area of 150 acres with a total investment of about 600 million yuan. The first phase has built a production unit with an annual output of 50,000 tons of CO2-based polycarbonate polyol, which is currently the world's largest monomer production unit. The first phase of the project started in February 2023 and successfully completed trial operation in January 2025. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for CO2-based polyol technology in the polyurethane industry, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional production methods. It is expected that the annual sales revenue of the first phase of the project will reach RMB 1.5 billion, the annual tax revenue will be about RMB 60 million, and 150 new jobs will be created.
The second phase of the project will invest an additional RMB 1.4 billion to add an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons of CO2-based polycarbonate polyols and propylene carbonate.
The project is of great significance. In March 2024, the first phase of the 300,000 tons of CO2-based polycarbonate polyol project was included in the first batch of the country's "Green and Low-carbon Advanced Technology Demonstration Project List". In August 2024, the National Development and Reform Commission approved a subsidy of RMB 50 million for the project under the special fund of "Pollution Prevention and Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction", which further improved the effectiveness of the project construction. In addition, on December 31, 2024, the company's "Carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate polyether polyol preparation technology" was included in the "2024 Green and Low-carbon Product Technology and Supplier Catalog" by the Anhui Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology.
