China’s Exports Surge 12.4% in March While Imports Drop Sharply Raising Global Concerns
China delivered a surprise jolt to global markets in March with exports climbing 12.4% year-on-year, a result that shattered forecasts and hinted at a possible turnaround in the world’s second-largest economy. Analysts had expected a far weaker performance, but overseas shipments surged, driven by strong demand for Chinese goods in key markets such as Southeast Asia and parts of Europe.
In stark contrast, imports slipped 1.9%, a signal that domestic consumption remains under pressure. While the export boom offers a short-term boost, the decline in inbound trade raises questions about the sustainability of recovery momentum within China.
This unexpected trade data has sent ripples through financial markets, with the yuan strengthening briefly and regional stocks reacting to the export surge. However, economists warn that external demand may not remain reliable throughout 2025, especially as global interest rates remain high and geopolitical tensions linger.
Chinese officials are under pressure to boost internal growth, with investors closely watching for stimulus signals or policy shifts in the coming months. For now, the sharp export rebound offers hope, but the uneven trade pattern leaves a mixed outlook for the months ahead.
