Trump Tariffs Threaten 20000 Jobs in Irish Pharma Hub Growth at Risk
The pharmaceutical industry in County Cork, Ireland, which supports 20,000 jobs and drives nearly €100 billion ($114 billion) in exports, is facing uncertainty as Trump’s tariff policies loom over global trade. The factories in Ringaskiddy and Carrigaline, producing key products like Pfizer's Viagra, have become a critical part of Ireland’s economy, contributing almost half of its exports in 2024.
However, Trump’s warnings about imposing tariffs on pharmaceuticals are causing panic. Locals fear that jobs and the region’s economic boom could be at risk, with many questioning whether they should invest in homes or take on mortgages.
At the village pub in Ringaskiddy, residents discuss the potential fallout. While some believe the size of the factories means relocation to the US would take years, others worry about the immediate economic shock. Audrey Buckley, a local councillor, shared concerns about families potentially facing emigration again, recalling the struggles of the 1980s.
Economists predict that existing plants will likely remain in Ireland for the near future. Still, if tariffs persist, future investments in the region may shift elsewhere, altering the trajectory of Ireland’s booming pharmaceutical sector.
