UK Slashes Tariffs on 89 Products Boosting Chinese Exports by 40 Percent
In a bold move to stimulate economic growth, the UK government announced on April 13 it will suspend tariffs on 89 product categories, effective immediately. The list covers a wide range of goods including pasta, juice, spices, plastic items, and gardening supplies, with the tariff freeze expected to remain in place until July 2027.
Plastic-related goods make up 24% of the list, spanning everything from food-grade films to automotive component molds. For instance, juice products that previously faced duties between 14% and 30% will now enjoy zero tariffs, dramatically lowering import costs. According to UK officials, this measure could save businesses approximately £17 million annually, with potential benefits flowing down to consumers.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of shielding domestic companies from external trade shocks. The tariff pause is part of a broader strategy, which also includes an expansion of UK export finance by £20 billion and targeted support for firms impacted by foreign duties — small businesses could receive up to £2 million in loans under the new framework.
For Chinese exporters, the new policy brings immediate opportunity. Chinese scissors and knives exports to the UK have grown by 17.2% for three consecutive years, while plastic mold makers in Zhejiang now account for 38% of UK imports. Notably, small home appliance makers in Guangdong have seen UK orders spike 40%.
The tariff suspension amplifies China’s pricing edge and could accelerate its market share in the UK. However, Chinese companies must remain alert to British regulatory shifts and strategic realignments, as the UK may be seeking to build broader supply ties with the EU and ASEAN to hedge against U.S. and China dependence.
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that the UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) remains in effect. From April 2025, the PPT rate will rise from £217.85 to £223.69 per ton for packaging that doesn’t meet recycled content thresholds, adding a layer of compliance for exporters.
