BASF and Braven Environmental Reach Strategic Cooperation to Jointly Promote North American Plastic Circular Economy

ECHEMI 2025-04-18

BASF, a global chemical giant, recently signed a long-term supply agreement with environmental technology company Braven Environmental to use PyChem®, an ISCC PLUS-certified recycled raw material produced by its patented pyrolysis technology, to gradually replace fossil raw materials at the Port Arthur petrochemical base in Texas. The raw material comes from mixed plastic waste in landfills and is mass-produced through Braven's new multi-unit plant in Texas.

According to the agreement, PyChem® will be introduced into BASF's ChemCycling® recycling technology system and mass balance method will be used to produce recycled plastics with Ccycled® certification. In high-end application scenarios such as automobiles and construction, the performance indicators of such products are completely equivalent to those of traditional petrochemical products, and customers can achieve carbon reduction goals without adjusting existing production processes.

Christoph Gahn, head of circular economy at BASF, pointed out that this cooperation marks a key step in the commercialization of circular plastics in the North American market. Braven CEO Jim Simon emphasized that the technical synergy between the two parties will accelerate the industrial application of pyrolysis technology, and in the future, tens of thousands of tons of plastic waste can be converted into high-value raw materials each year. Data shows that every ton of recycled raw materials used through this system can reduce 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

This cooperation highlights the technological breakthrough of "turning waste into treasure" in the chemical industry - Braven's molecular recycling technology can decompose complex plastic mixtures into standardized synthesis gas, while BASF's ChemCycling® system can seamlessly integrate recycled raw materials into existing production processes. This closed-loop model provides a new paradigm for the treatment of difficult-to-recycle materials such as rigid plastic packaging and electronic waste.
