3 Billion Dollar Herbicide Breakthrough Gains First Global Approval in Peru

ECHEMI 2025-04-22

FMC Corporation has achieved a major regulatory milestone in Peru with the official registration of Keenali™, a next-generation herbicide powered by tetflupyrolimet (marketed as Dodhylex™). This approval marks the first-ever commercial launch of a Group 28 herbicide active ingredient, delivering a new mode of action in weed control after decades of stagnation in the field.

Tetflupyrolimet targets DHODH, a key enzyme in the pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway, effectively halting weed growth at the cellular level. This mechanism is especially promising for combating resistant grass species in rice cultivation, such as barnyardgrass and rough sprangletop, without harming rice crops.

Designed for pre- and early post-emergence use in both indica and japonica rice, Keenali™ provides superior crop safety. Its first market launch is expected in August 2025, setting the stage for broader commercialization across corn, soybean, sugarcane, and sunflower in the coming years.

Peru was selected for the debut not only for its rapidly expanding rice sector, but also due to its role as a leading regional consumer of milled rice. The registration gives FMC a competitive edge in accessing nearly 10% of Latin America’s rice acreage.

Keenali™ is already conditionally approved in the Philippines, with regulatory applications under review in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the United States. FMC’s multi-continent strategy reflects the company’s ambition to redefine herbicide innovation at a global scale.

The journey began in August 2023, when FMC announced Dodhylex™ as its official global brand. Within a year, applications had been submitted covering 35% of the world’s rice-growing area. By early 2025, the company announced additional brands for the U.S. and initiated commercial manufacturing.

Peak sales for tetflupyrolimet could reach $300–$400 million annually, positioning it as a key driver in FMC’s portfolio. Developed at the company’s Stine Research Center, the compound exemplifies FMC’s commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture.
