Clariant Launches Game-Changing Catalyst Cutting Steam Use by 25 Percent
On May 8, Clariant unveiled StyroMax™ UL-100, its most advanced catalyst to date for styrene production—achieving a record-setting steam-to-oil ratio of just 0.76, compared to the previous 1.02. This innovation significantly slashes energy usage while maintaining peak performance under ultra-low steam conditions.
Jointly developed with Technip Energies, this cutting-edge catalyst is engineered for new builds, revamps, and direct replacements across all plants licensed with Badger technology. The UL-100 enables producers to sharply reduce steam demand, cut carbon emissions, and boost overall plant sustainability without sacrificing output.
The breakthrough addresses a key challenge that has plagued the styrene industry for years: balancing energy efficiency with catalytic performance. Now, plant operators can unlock new levels of operational efficiency while minimizing their environmental impact.
Gene Mueller, VP of Clariant’s Ethylene business, emphasized that this development reflects their deep collaboration with clients: “We’ve co-created a solution that not only drives sustainability goals but also delivers measurable performance gains.”
