27 Years Later US Launches First Overhaul of Infant Formula Nutrition Rules
On May 13, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the FDA kicked off the first comprehensive review of infant formula nutrition standards since 1998. This long-overdue initiative is designed to enhance the safety, consistency, and nutritional integrity of products that millions of American families rely on.
Currently, infant formulas in the U.S. must meet specific minimum and maximum nutrient levels. However, with new scientific findings emerging globally, the FDA is now inviting public input to explore whether these existing nutrient limits should be adjusted.
The review will also cover testing for heavy metals and other contaminants in formulas and similar foods for young children—an issue that has drawn rising public concern.
This move signals a major policy shift aimed at aligning U.S. standards with the latest science and international benchmarks, ensuring babies receive the best possible nutritional start in life.
