9 Strict Rules in Peru’s Proposed Alcohol Law Aim to Eliminate Unsafe Drinks
On May 12, 2025, Peru’s Ministry of Production released draft regulation PEOTCP25003, introducing sweeping measures to tackle the production and import of substandard or adulterated alcoholic beverages. Public comments are open until July 11, 2025.
The proposal outlines strict definitions, registration protocols, and inspection procedures for alcohol manufacturers. It also targets beverages containing foreign particles, excessive heavy metals (e.g., copper > 2.0 mg/L, lead > 0.5 mg/L), methanol, industrial alcohol, or unauthorized additives. Packaging in non-sterile or reused containers, missing health registration, or poor sanitation practices will also be grounds for disqualification.
Violations will trigger severe penalties, as Peru moves to ensure all alcohol sold is safe for human consumption.
