Cariflex Launches $355 Million Singapore Latex Plant Doubling Global Capacity

ECHEMI 2025-05-22

On May 14, Cariflex Pte. Ltd., a global leader in synthetic polyisoprene latex for medical use, officially opened its new manufacturing plant on Jurong Island, Singapore. The $355 million facility is now the largest of its kind worldwide, significantly boosting the company’s ability to meet the growing demand for high-purity latex used in surgical gloves, condoms, and other protective applications.

The grand opening was attended by Singapore’s Minister for Manpower Dr. Tan See Leng, the Korean Ambassador to Singapore, and executives from DL Chemical, Cariflex’s parent company, along with representatives from the Singapore Economic Development Board and JTC Corporation.

The plant covers 6.1 hectares and will serve as a strategic manufacturing base for Southeast Asia, a major hub for medical glove and condom production. It will also support markets such as non-surgical gloves, adhesives, and laminate materials, further diversifying Cariflex’s product portfolio. Cariflex has been expanding globally, with notable investments in Brazil and Japan, including a $50 million expansion of its Paulinia site in 2021.

CEO Ryu Sang Woo highlighted that Singapore was chosen for its robust IP protection, highly skilled workforce, and strategic location near key customers. The site began construction in 2022 and is scheduled for full operation by November 2024, with modular scalability to accommodate future demand surges. Once at full capacity, Cariflex’s global production of polyisoprene latex will double compared to 2023.

The opening also underscores Singapore’s commitment to building innovation-driven industries and creating inclusive, high-value job opportunities. The plant has already created around 80 permanent jobs, most of which are held by Singaporeans. Cariflex has invested in comprehensive training programs across Brazil and Korea to ensure operational excellence and professional growth, especially for non-degree holders.

Having moved its global headquarters to Singapore in 2020, Cariflex reinforces its role as the only latex producer using anionic catalysts, offering superior purity, clarity, and softness in its materials.
