FDA to Review Safety of 10000 Food Additives Starting With High-Risk Chemicals
The FDA has announced a major plan to revisit the safety of 10,000 food additives, starting with controversial chemicals found in products like bread, cereals, and preserved meats. Ingredients such as ADA, BHT, and BHA, which have been linked to cancer and hormonal disruption in animal studies, are under scrutiny.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized that the focus is on addressing the chronic disease epidemic caused by ultraprocessed foods and additives. He stated, "The FDA and NIH are prioritizing the health impacts of these chemicals to ensure consumer safety."
The FDA’s new review process will replace the existing case-by-case system, introducing a systematic post-market evaluation to better assess high-risk ingredients. It plans to phase out artificial colors and dyes by 2027 and may enforce additional labeling or revoke approvals for chemicals deemed unsafe.
Chemicals like phthalates, propylparaben, and titanium dioxide are also being fast-tracked for evaluation. FDA Commissioner Martin Makary stated, “We are leveraging gold standard science to build a reliable review program that consumers can trust.”
Although the initiative has received praise, widespread layoffs within the FDA could slow the review process. To address this, the agency is turning to external contractors to support its efforts.
This overhaul aims to enhance transparency and safety, pushing food companies to reformulate products under mounting regulatory and consumer pressure.
