FMC Active Ingredient Lenacil Secures 15-Year Renewal in the EU

ECHEMI 2025-05-29

FMC Corporation recently announced that the renewal application for its active ingredient Lenacil has been approved in the European Union, allowing it to remain available to growers for the next 15 years. This renewal success stems from the positive vote of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCopaFF) on March 12, recognizing Lenacil's outstanding crop safety and sustainability performance.

This decision also means Lenacil is no longer classified as a "candidate for substitution" (CFS). As one of the few remaining active substances in HRAC Group 5, its market position has been further strengthened.

Lenacil is a soil-absorbed herbicide primarily used to control weeds that adversely affect crop yields. It has broad application, including on crops such as sugar beet, fodder beet, spinach, and strawberries, as well as some niche crops. This renewal is especially significant for sugar beet growers, providing them with a reliable solution to effectively manage herbicide-resistant weed populations, thereby ensuring economic stability for growers in the region.

The President of FMC's Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) division stated that following the 15-year renewal in the EU, the company will continue to develop Lenacil to deliver maximum value to farmers and provide them with the best herbicide solutions.
