Daqing Petrochemical Invests 39.1 Million Yuan in 40 Thousand Ton Polyolefin Elastomer Project Breaking Foreign Monopoly
On June 16, 2023, Daqing Petrochemical, a subsidiary of PetroChina, announced the official approval of its polyolefin elastomer (POE) production optimization project. This initiative involves a 39.1 million yuan investment to debottleneck and upgrade its existing linear polyethylene facility, leveraging PetroChina’s proprietary technology to achieve an annual capacity of 40,000 tons of gas-phase polyolefin elastomer.
Earlier, on June 9, the EPC general contracting bid results for Daqing Petrochemical’s new 30,000-ton-per-year POE industrial demonstration project were announced, with the contract awarded to PetroChina Jilin Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd.
The new demonstration project will utilize PetroChina’s cutting-edge proprietary technology, encompassing key process units such as raw material storage and refining, catalyst preparation, polymerization, solvent and monomer recovery, and extrusion pelletizing, alongside auxiliary facilities. The project is scheduled for handover by June 30, 2026, signaling an important step in POE industrial-scale development for PetroChina.
After more than a decade of research, PetroChina’s Petrochemical Research Institute has tackled major engineering challenges, including reactor heat removal, polymerization stability control, deep devolatilization, and product pelletizing. The institute successfully developed a 1,000-ton-per-year solution-based high-end elastomer pilot plant and launched 12 POE product grades, covering applications in photovoltaic films, impact modification, foam materials, and cables.
With the creation of a 10,000-ton-per-year process package, PetroChina has achieved industrial transformation, breaking foreign technological monopolies and establishing China’s leadership in POE new material innovation. The advancement of both the revamp and the new project at Daqing Petrochemical is expected to unlock significant market potential, providing robust support for the nation’s new material industry.
