Ascend to Shut Down Lianyungang Plant Within Months Optimizing Regional Operations

ECHEMI 2025-06-25

On June 17, 2025, Ascend Performance Materials announced its decision to begin an orderly shutdown of its hexamethylene diamine production facility in Lianyungang, China. This decision follows a thorough assessment of the plant’s long-term feasibility amid shifting market trends and regulatory challenges.

Phil McDivitt, Ascend’s President and CEO, stated: “As we continue our focus on operational efficiency, Ascend has made significant progress in improving its business. In April, we initiated the Chapter 11 process with support from our creditors to reduce debt and prepare for future growth. After carefully analyzing market dynamics and ongoing trade disputes, we determined that shutting down the Lianyungang plant is the most efficient path to support customers in the region.”

He added: “Decisions impacting employees are never easy. The Lianyungang team has consistently demonstrated outstanding dedication and professionalism, and we deeply appreciate their contributions. This decision does not reflect their hard work. We are committed to providing support for affected employees and ensuring a smooth transition for our customers and partners.”

Throughout the closure, Ascend will adhere to strict safety, environmental, and compliance standards, working closely with local authorities to meet all regulatory requirements. The company expects to finalize the shutdown within the coming months.

Other Ascend operations in China, including its facility in Suzhou, will continue operating as usual. The company remains focused on delivering high-quality, high-performance products to its global customers and anticipates completing the Chapter 11 process by the second half of this year, positioning itself for future success.
