Canada Exports First LNG Shipment to Asia Marks $29.4 Billion Milestone

ECHEMI 2025-07-09

Canada's first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) export shipment to Asia has departed from the Pacific Coast, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy trade. This follows Canada's first crude oil exports to Asia last year, reflecting a growing focus on diversifying export markets amidst escalating US-Canada trade tensions.

The export facility, operated by Canada LNG, is the first large-scale LNG production plant in the country and the first in North America directly connected to the Pacific Coast. Its strategic location in Kitimat, British Columbia, significantly reduces shipping times to Asia, a region with soaring energy demand.

The $40 billion CAD ($29.4 billion USD) project, Canada’s largest private investment to date, is a joint venture between Shell, Petronas, China National Petroleum Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Korea Gas Corporation. Once fully operational, the facility will have an annual LNG production capacity of 14 million tons, with plans to expand to 28 million tons in its second phase.

As the world's fifth-largest natural gas producer, Canada primarily exports to the United States. However, with LNG facilities located on the Pacific Coast, Canadian LNG can bypass the Panama Canal and directly reach Asian markets, where energy demand is surging. Moreover, Canada's natural gas, priced at less than half of the Henry Hub benchmark price, offers a competitive edge in international markets.
