100% Renewable Breakthrough! BASF’s Chemetall Plant Sets Green Power Benchmark in China

ECHEMI 2025-07-16

BASF’s Chemetall plant in Pinghu has achieved a major sustainability milestone, becoming the first facility in the local industrial zone to reach 100% renewable electricity coverage. This achievement, powered by both green electricity purchases and a 2,500-square-meter rooftop solar system, has won high praise from Pinghu’s Economic and Ecological Environment Office.

Opened in 2022, the Pinghu site is now Chemetall’s largest production base worldwide. By fully transitioning to renewables, the plant is set to slash its carbon emissions by an estimated 2,700 tons by 2025. This bold move not only accelerates Chemetall’s own climate goals—targeting 80% renewable energy use across all sites by 2025—but also provides a powerful example for other chemical producers in the region.

Frank Naber, Chemetall’s Senior Vice President, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, calling this 100% green power milestone a “major step” in contributing to a cleaner future. The recognition from local authorities serves as further validation of Chemetall’s ambitious strategy.

Chemetall continues to roll out innovative initiatives to minimize carbon output at its global production sites, aligning closely with BASF’s broader environmental vision. This pioneering achievement in Pinghu signals a new era for green transformation in China’s chemical industry.
