900 Volt Challenge Met Kuraray’s GENESTAR™ Sets New Benchmark for EV Insulation Safety

ECHEMI 2025-07-16

Kuraray has validated that its heat-resistant polyamide GENESTAR™ can withstand up to 900 volts without tracking failure, setting a new safety standard for electric vehicle (EV) components. This breakthrough was confirmed using the newly released UL 2597 standard, which for the first time enables third-party testing for tracking resistance up to 900 volts—well beyond the 600-volt limit of previous ASTM and IEC protocols.

With the rapid adoption of high-voltage EV systems, including commercialized 800V architectures and upcoming models surpassing 1000V, the demand for robust insulation is greater than ever. GENESTAR™ not only passed the rigorous UL 2597 assessment, but the halogen-free, flame-retardant grade GP2450NH-2 BLACK maintained full integrity at the maximum test voltage.

Previously, real-world voltage requirements outpaced industry testing capabilities. Now, Kuraray’s achievement bridges that gap, offering automakers certified materials to design safer, more compact, and high-performance EV components. The company will continue to advance GENESTAR™ to support the next generation of automotive electrification.

Tracking resistance, the ability of insulation to prevent micro-discharges from forming conductive paths, is essential for preventing electrical breakdown and fire. Kuraray’s 900V success marks a critical step forward for the future of high-voltage EV safety.
