172 Percent Carbon Reduction INEOS Styrolution’s 100 Percent Bio-Based PS Launches in Japan’s Food Packaging

ECHEMI 2025-07-16

INEOS Styrolution has achieved a major breakthrough with the commercial rollout of its 100% bio-based polystyrene, Styrolution PS 158K BC100, now used in food trays for a leading Japanese retailer. This milestone, reached in early 2025, marks the first time food packaging in Japan features this ISCC-certified, mass balance bio-material.

Compared to conventional fossil-based PS, Styrolution PS 158K BC100 enables an impressive carbon footprint reduction of up to 172%. The product fully complies with global food contact regulations, including Japan’s Food Sanitation Act, and has earned the JCII’s top-tier Grade A safety certification. Its performance—combining high heat resistance and clarity—ensures both food safety and shelf appeal.

“We are thrilled to see this sustainable innovation enter daily life in Japan,” said Marcela Villegas, Vice President for Asia-Pacific. “This proves that companies can achieve ambitious environmental goals without compromising on quality or safety.”
