Wanhua Chemical Secures Key Patent for High-Purity Lactide Catalyst Streamlines PLA Production Process
Wanhua Chemical has recently been granted a pivotal invention patent for a novel catalyst used in the synthesis of lactide from lactic acid, with broad implications for the biodegradable plastics industry. The technology addresses long-standing bottlenecks in producing high-quality polylactic acid (PLA), a leading sustainable polymer.
Traditional PLA production faces two main challenges: direct dehydration-polymerization yields low-molecular-weight products due to water removal difficulties, while the two-step lactide route is limited by impurities and catalyst toxicity. Wanhua’s breakthrough involves an organometallic complex catalyst containing aminopyridine and alkoxy groups, built around biocompatible metals such as calcium, magnesium, or zinc.
This catalyst offers high optical purity in lactide synthesis and significantly reduces residual lactic acid—often a major hurdle in industrial production. Its structure allows rapid interaction with lactic acid, enhancing efficiency and shortening reaction times. Unlike conventional metal salt catalysts, it avoids product contamination and is easily regenerated.
Notably, the new design also solves problems of catalyst precipitation and hydrolysis, ensuring both stability and solubility during scale-up. The result is a more streamlined, energy-saving process that delivers high-performance PLA with fewer purification steps. Wanhua’s innovation promises to accelerate green material adoption and boost the competitiveness of bio-based plastics.
